Canelés de Bordeaux

Hi guys!

I’m super excited to share this post with you today!
Earlier this week, I posted this picture on my Facebook, Twitter and Instagram:

Rhum & Vanilla

You could guess what I was going to make with those two ingredients. I loved the ideas you guys had but no one guessed it!

So here it is. I made Canelés de Bordeaux!

Canelés de Bordeaux are an iconic pastry from, how could it be, Bordeaux in France! These little pieces of yummyness are perfect to serve with your afternoon tea or coffee :)

I’m pretty stoked with the result because to me, Canelés de Bordeaux are some pretty hard things to make. Let me correct that: I always thought it was hard to make them. Oh well, it’s not something you make in an hour either. Making the dough is the easiest part, baking them is a bit more difficult. They take a lot of time in the oven and to get that perfect thin caramel shell isn’t a walk in the park at all. But with a little bit of patience and a lot of love for the pastry, you’ll do just fine :D

Canelés de Bordeaux 7

Canelés de Bordeaux come from Bordeaux in France. The history of this iconic pastry is a bit of a mystery because no one really knows who created them or when. But we do know the Canelés de Bordeaux have been with us for many many years!

Canelés de Bordeaux 9

I absolutely LOVE Canelés de Bordeaux! The boyfriend thinks they’re too sweet but can a pastry ever be too sweet? Naaaaah!

Canelés de Bordeaux 10

The recipe I used was ment for 10 Canelés de Bordeaux…
I filled my 20 pieces mold three times! THREE! :o So I guess I have a little mold and the other a bigger one? :p I think I should have added a little more rhum to it because of the amount of Canelés I was able to make with the recipe.

Canelés de Bordeaux 11

Look how perfectly moist they are in the middle :)

What we need for +- 50 pieces:

  • 2 eggs
  • 2 egg yolks
  • 8 spoons rhum (I’ve calculated a bit extra because of the amount of Canelés)
  • 120 g all-purpose flour
  • 25 g butter
  • 200 g powder sugar
  • 50 cl milk
  • 2 vanilla-pods
  • Canelés de Bordeaux mold

Canelés de Bordeaux 3

How to:

  1. Preheat the oven at 200 degrees centigrade.
  2. Mix together the flour, sugar, eggs and egg yolks.
  3. Heat the milk with the butter and the split vanilla-pods.
    Scrape out the vanilla.
  4. Mix the heated vanilla-milk-mixture with the batter.
  5. Add the rhum.
  6. Butter your mold and sprinkle them with sugar.
  7. Bake the Canelés de Bordeaux for 10 minutes at 200 degrees centigrade. After that, bake them for about 35 minutes at 180 degrees centigrade. Use a sharp knife to check if they’re done. If the knife comes out clean, they’re ready.
  8. Get them out of the mold as soon as they’re baked.
  9. Share them with family and friends!

They make the perfect treat for your coffee or tea time :)

Enjoy these pretty little Canelés de Bordeaux!

Bakeries in Paris

Bonjour mes chéri(e)s!

I know, you guys haven’t heard of me for a while…
But now I’m back!
I was sooooo busy trying to find new inspiring ideas for my blog and then we went to Paris with our class.
Yes, that’s exactly what I was thinking! Why not write a blog about the bakeries in Paris! And so I have a special for you guys :)
First things first. I always LOVED the bakeries in France. The bread and everything is so much better than it is here. Or is it just a feeling because we’re on holiday then?
Anyway, I just knew I had to do something about these bakeries. I hope you guys like it and maybe you’ll also want to go to Paris and its bakeries ^^

Welcome to Paris!

In Belgium, we have a chip shop on every corner (so to speek). France, and of course also Paris, has the same but with bakeries.
You can’t imagine how happy I was during the three days I’ve spent there.
You have all sorts of bakeries. Old, cute, modern, big, small, famous, …

There are two specific bakeries I’d like to talk about.
The first one is ‘Le petit musée du chocolat’. It’s not really a bakery nor a museum. But it’s called like that.
I have to be honest, I’d never heard of it before. I saw it on our way to Montmartre. There was a street with lots of souvenir shops and then I saw this store. It was quite big, comparing to the size of the other stores.
The name said enough for me to enter the store ;)
It’s not all chocolate here. They have cookies, merengues, caramel, …
I’ll show you

WP_000752WP_000748WP_000749WP_000743

I have to admit, if they would ever ask me to come and work there, right away! :D But it wouldn’t be good for my figure, I guess…
I was like a child in a candy store. Cookies, macarons, chcolate everywhere. And it’s such a beautiful house too. The wood and the colours…
So, when you visite Montmartre and the Sacré Coeur you must definately stop by this wonderfull store.
By the way, I didn’t buy anything there :o I know! My backpack was already filled with stuff and it was so hot that I thought it would probably all melt :(
But when I’m going to Paris again, I’ll absolutely buy something there. And if I win the lottery, I’ll buy the whole store.
There is one bakey, or better pastry shop, where I did buy something: Ladurée.
We have one in Antwerp but it’s not the same. The Ladurée in Paris (Champs-Elysées) is way bigger and has a tea room too!
Again, I felt like a child in a candy store…

There was a line but I really really REALLY wanted some macarons from here. And my backpack was empty so that wasn’t a problem ;)
I bought a ‘chausson aux pommes’ and four macarons. I know, I was so hungry I didn’t have time to take a picture of it before eating it. (sorry!)
On the picture below you can see two chocolate ones and one vanilla macaron. I have to say, the vanilla one was super delicious! The others were too but still…

Now that I went to Ladurée in Paris, the one in Antwerp will probably dissapoint but I still think I have to try it as well. ;)
I really enjoyed my trip to Paris and I hope you guys will go there too one day. It’s the city of love (and of the macarons).
I wish I could have stayed there longer and I already want to go back :(
Maybe, if I start saving some money, I’ll go next year :)

Have a delicious night or day!

xxx Sarah

p.s. I loooove the bakeries in Paris! Have I meantioned that already?
