Hi guys!
Do you know what day it is today? Exactly! It’s the Twelfth-night or Driekoningen!
I don’t know if you guys celebrate this day but we, Belgians, do 😀 Children go door to door to sing and hopefully get some candy! (At least I always wanted candy as a kid. Nowadays kids want money rather than candy… Where did the world go)
Anyway, the kids love it!
There is a pie for this day. The pie was originally served on January the 5th.
The pie hides a bean or a figure inside and the one who gets the piece with the bean wins the crown!
This person gets to be the king on january the 6th.
I have some great memories from this day! As a child, I always went to my grnadmother to sing and eat this delicious pie.
For some mysterious reason, I always got that bean! I accuse my granmother for having something to do with this 😉
This year, I decided to bake my own Twelfth-night Pie! I saw the recipe at Lieziepeasy and she said it was easy, so I believed her!
Right she was! I don’t think it took me half an hour to get the batter done and put the pie in the oven!
Guess who won that title of ‘king’ this year? My grandmother! 😀
She can rule the house and my granddad today 😀 (which she always does anyway 😉 )
All credits for this delicious recipe belong to Lieziepeasy of course! Make sure to pay her a visit because she’s totally worth it!
What do we need:
- 2 rolls of puff pastry
- 125 g powder sugar
- 125 g butter
- 125 g almond powder
- 2 eggs + 1 egg yolk
- 25 g flour
- a bean or figure if wanted 🙂
How to:
Mix together the almond powder and the powder sugar.
Mix the butter in your robot. (Or a handmixer)
Mix in 1 egg and half of the almond-sugar mixture.
Mix in the other egg and the rest of the mixture.
Mix it all together until it’s a nice and light batter.
Sift the flour and mix it together with the batter.
Cut two circles out of the puff pastry. I chose each one to be 25 cm.
Put one of the circles on a baking plate with some baking paper.
Make holes with a fork.
Put the batter in a piping bag and start filling the circle. Keep 3 cm from the edges.
Hide the bean or figure in the batter if you want to.
Use the egg yolk to cover the edges.
Put the second circle on top of it. Make sure the edges match 🙂
Squeeze it together.
Cover the whole pie with egg yolk.
If you want to make beautiful edges, use the back of the fork to make carvings in the side of the pie.
Leave the pie to rest for 30 minutes. (You can clean the kitchen if needed in the meantime 😉 )
Preheat the oven at 200°C.
Bake the pie for about 30 minutes. Make sure it’s nicely brown/golden.
Let it cool and serve!
Who do you think will be the ‘king’ at your house?
I’m taking my pie to Justine’s Tea Time! She might get that crown 😉
Have a delicious day ❤
xxx Sarah
Find me on:
Reblogged this on Sarah's Little Kitchen and commented:
Hi guys!
It’s the 6th of January 2016 already and that means: Driekoningen! (Twelfth-Night or Epiphany)
I’m not making a new recipe this year so I got my lazy-mood on and just reblog last year’s post. Why change a winning recipe, right? 😉
I hope you guys like the pie and have one yourself!
Have a delicious day ❤

Oops, I also wanted to ask… are puff pastries you use have to be kept chilled right up till you put them in the oven, like the brands we have available in the USA?

I don’t think so. I keep them in the fridge until I start making my recipe. I have cut them and put holes in it with my fork before starting my pie 🙂
I hope this answers your question ^^

What a beautiful creation, Sarah! Basically it is the same recipe as French galette des rois. I did check Lieziepeasy’s blog. She is a very talented foodie. My galette looks more like hers, and I believe yours turned out looking better than both of ours. Bravo! 🙂

What a fun sounding tradition, we don’t have anything like that here in the UK – the 12th night is when you’re supposed to have Christmas decorations down by, but that’s about it haha!
The pie sounds yummy too!

Oh how cool to have a tradition to put the trees down at a specific day :p oh well, I guess we have that too because we have tree burnings all around the country this weekend…
Thanks! Glad you like the pie 🙂
Have a great weekend!

Oooh this looks delicious and I love the story attached to it. It’s very funny that your grandmother got the figure/bean this time. Now I wanted to see the figure where is it? hehe..Thank you for joining Tea Time, this is a really great tradition. I guess it is like Halloween here in the fact kids expect sweets, wlel they did but like you say want money now, no way I wouldn’t give them that, its candy or nothing, I guess I am a bit old fashioned like that hehe. Now I think this looks like I could actually achieve making this so am saving it to my scrapbook, thank you xx

I’m oldfashioned too because I too only give them candy 🙂
